Do any of you remember this clip from Sesame Street about a flea circus?
Did you know that flea circuses were real? Sadly, they didn't raise flags or light canons, but they did push miniature carts around and got everyone feeling itchy. In the second one, the fleas also bring to life a merry-go-round and roll a ball:
It's St. Patrick's Day and in honour of that, I'm already wasted I've pulled up this clip of the Swedish Chef, Animal and Beaker singing "Danny Boy". It's from a July 1980 episode of The Muppet Show.
You know how they say that all modern rock "borrows" from the Beatles? I feel that way about Jim Henson and comedy. You can't tell me this December 1988 SNL sketch doesn't remind you at all of anything:
Just sayin'.
In case you came here for the 50s Housewife stuff, I also dug something up for you - a St. Patrick's Day dinner plan from the Searchlight Homemaking Guide. So, what's on the menu?
Carbs! Lots and lots of carbs!:
The only thing that is truly foreign to me on that list is Mint Ice. I looked it up, and it's basically a precursor to the Shamrock Shake, minus whatever drug McDonald's puts in its food to form happy childhood memories in your brain. Here's the recipe (sorry for the blur - the binding is tight - but you should still be able to figure it out):
Sort of a frozen, minty meringue with green dye - surely direct from the ancient family recipes of the Flanagans, O'Briens and Gradys of the world.
... but this familiar face would be the best SNL host EVER, and I'm not just saying that as giant weirdo who has a childish adoration for all things Jim Henson.
The use of air quotes at the very end actually made me shriek a little. Oh, way to be awesome, Sesame Street writers.
I would totally stay up in on a Saturday night to watch this.
I'm a little late on this bandwagon, but thanks to seeing a Facebook photo of my friend Julianne's husband sporting a cool t-shirt (uh, you follow?), I'm now hooked on the tickles-my-fancy awesomeness of James Hance.
I love the Henson. I love the Star (both Trek and Wars). I love a good mash-up. James Hance pushes all my buttons. His site features a cornucopia of art that pairs Star Wars with Winnie the Pooh, Mr. Hooper with Obama's classic campaign poster, Picasso with Bert & Ernie, and more. My geeky, nostalgic heart is squeeing all over the place.
Prints and t-shirts are available on his website ... you know, should anyone be wondering what to get a certain someone for her birthday ... [/hint] [/drooling consumerism]
I LOL'd (for reals, not just typing it) when an example of a disastrous lack of editing slipped by a newspaper:
Dying. Poor Count. He was never my favourite Muppet but he wasn't that bad.
Also in Muppet-related news (I'm starting to feel like I need a separate Henson tag for this blog), if you haven't yet seen The Muppets do Bohemian Rhapsody, it is a must:
My name is Jen and I look like that picture at all times. I enjoy appetizers as entrees, fountains choreographed to music and television shows intended for teenage girls. Oh - and I really dislike it when people spell it "Jenn"; it's practically a phobia.
